About the Mississippi Saints

View of Salt Lake Valley from Big Mountain Utah

Our Origins

In 1846, southern members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered in Mississippi and headed northwest to join the main body of Saints along the Platte River. Known as the Mississippi Saints, this company traveled to Fort Laramie before learning that the main body of Saints had not come west in 1846. The Mississippi Saints then traveled south and wintered in Pueblo where they were joined by three detachments of the Mormon Battalion. In 1847, many returned to Fort Laramie where they joined Brigham Young and other Saints that entered the Salt Lake Valley in July 1847. This site is dedicated to the Mississippi Saints and the families that composed this group.
